Sеniоr hound Nаmеd Gеrtiе desires 1,000 Hugs Bеfоrе Shе Pаssеs

Meet the delightful Ms. Gertrude, affectionately known as Gertie to us humans. While some senior dogs chase extravagant dreams, Gertie, a 14-year-old purebred of the charming "Who Knows What" variety, seeks something simpler yet profoundly heartwarming: 1,000 hugs.

Amid the scorching 107-degree heat of Arizona, Gertie and her younger canine companion, Pablo, found themselves abandoned at a McDonald's. Despite a valiant attempt through a widely shared Facebook plea, no one stepped forward to give this duo a home. Gertie, at the age of 12, and Pablo, the Chihuahua with a wary disposition, faced uncertain odds.

Yet, as fate would have it, their luck turned around when they encountered the warm-hearted Kate Goodhart. She recognized the endearing face of the senior Gertie and could imagine the two companions sweltering in their fur jackets under the relentless sun. Without hesitation, Kate invited them into her home.

While Gertie may wear the mantle of an elder stateswoman, anyone who has experienced the grace of a senior dog knows that age is but a number. Sadly, people often pass by, blinded to the older, calmer, and more affectionate qualities these dogs possess. Goodhart shared on Gertie's Facebook page:

"They don't see older, calmer, and more loving; they only see adorable, cuddly, and bouncing."

These attributes embody a slice of heaven for Goodhart and all who have embraced the joyful chaos of wrestling with a dog. The question arises: Why did it take so long for this wise and sweet dog to find a loving home? Perhaps the attention and care they needed seemed overwhelming.

United by an unbreakable bond, Gertie and Pablo remain inseparable. Against the advice of their veterinarian, who suggested euthanasia due to Gertie's myriad health issues, her family recognized her fighting spirit. Settling into her new abode ignited a remarkable improvement in her well-being.

Now on a heartwarming mission, Gertie, a prime example of elderly elegance, embraces life with vigor, knowing that time might be fleeting. Her mother affirms Gertie's love for "meeting new people and receiving hugs from every soul she encounters." What better way to bid adieu than with a thousand hugs and a grand finale?

Goodhart's intention is to bring joy to Gertie's days, yet if this endeavor removes the blinders that obscure the brilliance of senior dogs in others' eyes, then that's a splendid bonus. This journey is about savoring moments, and should Gertie tire or feel unwell during her embrace-filled escapades, she'll graciously decline, as difficult as it may be.

Gertie has found her haven in the vicinity of her loving family, residing in "Anthem, Cave Creek, Carefree, and the neighboring regions down to Greenway." So, whether you extend your affection on Facebook or opt for a real-world visit, be sure to envelop her in a heartfelt bear hug. Bravo, Gertie, for achieving your goal of 1,000 hugs! We're sending virtual hugs your way right now!
