Hope For Paws was contacted by Persephone Harrington, who had discovered a senior homeless dog seeking refuge beneath a discarded container in a junkyard.
Upon the arrival of the rescue team, they found the dog nestled amidst the mud and debris under the container.
After engaging with local residents, rescuers learned that the dog had been abandoned by its owner who was evicted nine years ago. Throughout this period, the dog, affectionately named Josephine or Pheenie, had survived on the streets, longing for the companionship of its absent owner.
While kind-hearted individuals had provided sporadic meals, Pheenie yearned for more – the warmth of a loving home. The rescuers gently placed a lightweight rope around Pheenie's neck and awaited her response. Emerging with a gentle and kind demeanor, Pheenie stepped out from under the container. Upon closer examination, it became evident that Pheenie had a unique history – her teeth bore the signs of neglect, with all the enamel decayed and gone.
Promptly taken to CARES, Pheenie received comprehensive medical care, including a much-needed bath. Veterinary assessments revealed the extent of her ailments: she suffered from discoschondylitis, a spinal cord infection, severe dental disease, and a urinary tract infection. Additionally, multiple mammary tumors were identified, a common occurrence in unspayed females.
Following her bath, Pheenie curled up on a couch, cocooned in warmth and blankets. For the first time in nine years, she peacefully drifted into slumber, a testament to her newfound contentment.
The kind-hearted team at LOS ANGELES Animal Rescue extended their care to Pheenie, offering her a loving home for her remaining days. Pheenie's life transformed as she embarked on walks, reveled in outdoor play, frolicked in the snow, and experienced genuine love – a stark contrast to her years of solitude. Her existence finally mirrored the joyful life that every dog deserves.
Five months after her rescue, Pheenie passed away tranquilly, finding comfort by the fireplace. Gratitude was extended to the concerned individual who sought help, the dedicated HFP rescuers, the proficient veterinary team, and the compassionate staff at Los Angeles Animal Rescue. Thanks to their collective efforts, Pheenie's final months were rich with experiences and affection, a departure from her solitary existence beneath a discarded container.
